How to apply Responsible Innovation in your own processes and projects?

RRI, or Responsible Research and Innovation, refers to an approach in research and innovation governance that aims to ensure the ethical, societal, and environmental implications of research and innovation are taken into account throughout the entire process. It seeks to align research and innovation activities with societal values and needs, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable innovation. However, this is not enough to ensure innovation acceptance, uptake and transition of business processes to use the innovation. Thus, XPRO Consulting Limited has created a methodology of applying RRI with change management theory combined with design thinking principles.

The methodology is called the RRI Roadmap©™. Our proprietary Responsible Research and Innovation Roadmap methodology with tools is practical, applicable in your sector and it is people-centred. As every innovation brings change, this change must be managed effectively to guarantee successful execution. Responsible innovation will change your organisation's and partners' perspective and we are here to help you through this transition and to enable responsible innovation uptake.

The Responsible Research and Innovation Roadmap has been applied in sectors such as:
  • Circular Economy,
  • Bio-economy,
  • New Genome Techniques (NGTs)
  • Water,
  • Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus (WEFE-Nexus)
  • Security
The RRI Roadmap methodology can be licensed for a specific project, initiative, duration and number or application sites.

The RRI Roadmap provides easy to use tools for:
  1. Identify Stakeholders and Needs: Analyse stakeholders and understand their needs and concerns.
  2. Motivate Change and Urgency: Communicate the benefits of the innovation and the risks of inaction.
  3. Build Trust: Foster transparency, collaboration, and feedback mechanisms.
  4. Involve Stakeholders in Ideation: Co-create the innovation's scope aligned with stakeholders' values.
  5. Address Enablers and Barriers: Identify what enables and impedes innovation uptake and strategise accordingly through co-design.
  6. Drive Change: Develop and execute an implementation plan with stakeholder support.
  7. Measure and Adjust: Track progress, gather feedback, and adapt strategies as needed.
  8. Intensify Transition: Increase awareness and celebrate successes to sustain momentum.

Responsible Research and Innovation continues in Horizon Europe

RRI is a European Commission initiative to make research and innovation actions more society conscious by focusing on:
  • Public Engagement: involve the society in research and innovation processes. Make them understand the challenges and ask them to provide their input, express their needs and engage them so that it takes responsibility of its future actions.
  • Open Science: Scientific results should be easily accessible and to be communicated in an easy to understand language;
  • Science Education: strengthen scientific understanding at all levels of society from young to older;
  • Ethics: Do the right thing responsibly for the society and the environment
  • Gender Equality: involving both men and women in research and innovation enriches the process and makes the results more relevant to the society. Create an equal opportunity environment for both genders.
  • Governance: Be responsible and accountable for your actions. It does not matter if you are in a public organisation, university, research institution, small or large company, you are above all a citizen and a human responsible for the society we live in. Take responsibility and accountability of our actions for a more sustainable environment.
