Research and Innovation Projects
Since 2003, XPRO Consulting is actively collaborating with European Research and Innovation institutions in research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission. XPRO's projects started with Framework Programme 6 and continued in the Framework Programme 7 and Horizon 2020. XPRO Consulting is ready to continue its spillover of know-how in Horizon Europe Funding Programme of the European Commission. Examples of EU-funded projects:
DETECTIVE – Detection of NGT products to promote innovation in the European union
DETECTIVE, a four-year (2024-2028) EU-funded research project, aims to develop, validate, and promote innovative detection methods for plant and animal products of new genomic techniques (NGTs) such as gene editing and cisgenesis. The European and international food production and distribution systems are interlinked and the need to trace plants and animals and their food products is important for labelling, traceability, and consumer choice. Recognising the shortcomings of existing analytical methods for detecting NGTs, DETECTIVE is enhancing its research and development efforts by exploring alternative approaches to identity preservation in the supply chain. It will involve key stakeholders - official and private laboratories, farmers, and agri-food supply chain stakeholders - to jointly identify detection needs for improving knowledge for reliable detection. DETECTIVE will complement its technical R&D activities in analytical methods with a comprehensive exploration of non-technical approaches. Applying the responsible research and innovation (RRI) and systems mapping approaches through our own RRI Roadmap, DETECTIVE will actively involve stakeholders to support a plan to improve the detection capabilities of laboratories, enabling them to fulfil their responsibilities for the detection of NGTs. DETECTIVE will establish a community of practice (CoP) to facilitate knowledge sharing among laboratories. A train-the-trainer programme will be provided to ensure effective implementation. XPRO Consulting is the project manager and work-package leader for the Empowerment and Training activities. The DETECTIVE consortium is led by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences with 19 partners from 8 EU Member States, Switzerland, and China as well as the Joint Research Centre from the European Commission. |

GeneBEcon - capturing the potential of Gene editing for a sustainable BioEconomy
GeneBEcon is an ambitious Horizon Europe-funded project about the innovation potential of Gene Editing for a sustainable bio-economy in Europe. New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) represent a powerful toolbox and complement traditional breeding techniques. GeneBEcon focuses on NGTs in potato and microalgae for promoting energy-efficient, low-input, and zero-pollution agricultural production and clean industrial processing by acting on three fronts: 1) develop new gene editing on plants constructing a toolbox for NGTs for potato and microalgae, as case studies to assess regulatory options, analyse the economic impact and assess societal perceptions. 2) study social, economic, and regulatory dimensions looking at the NGT potential for the European Green Deal, the 2030 Climate Target Plan, and the Circular Economy Action Plan. 3) investigate risks and benefits to ensure that NGT innovations are developed in a responsible, inclusive, and transparent way. XPRO Consulting is the project manager of GeneBEcon and leads all the Responsible Research and Innovation activities with stakeholders through its proprietary method the RRI Roadmap. GeneBEcon has a budget of 5.5 million Euros over three years. Start Date: 1 September 2022 End Date: 31 August 2025 GeneBEcon has a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder consortium, including leading scientists from 11 European countries: |

Marine organisms produce a vast diversity of primary and secondary metabolites with antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, nutritional, photoprotective activity or other beneficial properties. The exploitation of marine bioresources and the valorisation of their natural products are encompassed by the burgeoning field of marine biotechnology, which is a high priority for the successful implementation of Blue Growth and Bioeconomy strategies within the EU. Ocean4Biotech is a COST action that started in 2019 and will be ongoing until 2024 with the overall aims:
WG1: Ecology platform development; Leader: Irem Deniz Can WG2: Tools and infrastructure; Leader: Susana P. Gaudencio WG3: Use case scenarios; Leader: Arita Dubnika WG4: Legal aspects, IPR and Ethics; Leader: Xenia Theodotou Schneider WG5: Implementation and outreach; Leader: Lucie Novoveska |
